Clean Beauty Labels: What to Read Before You Buy

Decode personal-care labels — fragrance, actives, and marketing claims — so you buy products that fit your skin.

“Clean” is a marketing word, not a regulated standard. Your best filter is the ingredient list.

Start with your goal

Dryness, acne-prone skin, and sensitivity need different formulas. Buy for the problem, not the trend.

Fragrance is optional

If you react easily, fragrance-free options reduce risk. Essential oils still count as fragrance for many sensitive users.

Concentration and contact time

A strong active used twice a week can outperform a weak daily serum. Follow usage directions — especially with retinoids and acids.

Value is usage, not jar size

A smaller bottle you finish beats a jumbo you abandon. Watch for sales on brands you already tolerate.
